‘Zero waste’ concepts in supermarkets
Among the motivations for doing this, are annoyance with the growing waste worldwide and contributing to a better environment. A sentiment that prevails among customers. The packaging-free shops are already found in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Austria. Belgium opens a packaging-free store this very month, as is Austin Texas.
Bulk without packaging
The zero waste concept differs notably on the field of bulk goods. Fruits and vegetables are also available separately at speciality stores and supermarkets. In the package-free shops, products like pasta, rice and cereal are also offered separately. Customers can buy the amount they need, bringing their own containers, bags or glass jars.
The package brought by consumers, is weighed on entry and receives a label. At the checkout, the weight of the packaging is subtracted of the total weight. Price-wise, there is little difference between the packaging-free shops and supermarkets.
New outlets
Other European cities are now also opening packaging-free shops, including Lucca, Bordeaux, Vienna and since last month, Antwerp. The basis of these stores is the same: less waste, happy customers.
