"Greece's production of kiwis this season is more or less comparable to last year"

Production of kiwis in Greece is expected to be on a normal level, with maybe a very slight decrease in volumes overall, says Apostolos Tsinoglou, owner of the Greek fruit exporter Europe Export: "Compared to last year's data, the production of kiwis this season is more or less comparable to the production of last year. If anything, we expect there could be a slight decrease in volumes, maybe by about 10 per cent. However, hopefully the new plantations will make up for that, adding a few more kilograms of kiwi to the harvest."

Tsinoglou states that the cost of kiwis could increase this year, and Greek growers have had to irrigate more due to the weather. "This summer is characterized by water scarcity. Due to the drought experienced in Greece, but also in other countries, farmers are forced to irrigate much more. As an indirect consequence of this, the prices of kiwis will be increased as well. Because the water and electricity required for this extra irrigation also come at a cost."

For the season, Tsinoglou hopes to increase his presence in the South American markets, but also to reach some new markets in Asia and Europe: "The goal is to move more kiwis in Latin America this season. Also, we'll try to enter the Korean, Indonesian, and Scandinavian markets. The main challenges are price levels, as Greece is seeing all of the fruits reach expensive price levels, which means we'll have to be careful and make sure the market can absorb the price that we put on the Greek kiwis this year."

For Europe Export 2016, showcasing their brand will be a major priority this season. "Our main expectation is to increase our total kiwi exports by 10 to 15%, to enter new markets as I mentioned earlier, but most of all, to establish our new brand 'Babyfruit 2016'. We will also make sure we have a presence as a company during all the important fruit exhibitions, so that the world can get to know us better. For example, on September 30, we'll be at Fruit Attraction in Madrid to showcase our new brand," Tsinoglou concludes.
