Bizerba wins Top Supplier Retail Award with self-checkout solution

Bizerba has won the EHI Retail Institute's Top Supplier Retail 2020 award. This is part of the 2020 Reta Awards. The Reta Award went to METRONOM – METRO AG's technical branch - for the installation of the innovative Supersmart powered by Bizerba. This solution is a Scan & Go Loss Prevention system.

"Supersmart powered by Bizerba is an innovative solution for the retail sector. It will considerably change store and shopper experiences," says a Bizerba spokesperson. "Checkout waiting times will be reduced, and products no longer have to be placed on the conveyor belt. This is made possible by using innovative technologies such as AI and image recognition. This system fulfills the retailer's dream of reducing losses. With current self-checkout solutions, this reduction is four percent."

Supersmart powered by Bizerba systems have been installed in seven Makro stores in the Czech Republic. In these stores, shoppers use their smartphones to scan products. Customers always have an overview of their purchases. This is thanks to an app, specially adapted for Makro.

At the cashier, a scale checks that the items' weight matches those in the scanned shopping cart. AI is working in parallel in the background. The shopping cart is compared to big data as well as shoppers' usual shopping behavior. Software enables image recognition using camera technology. It checks the scanned shopping basket's generated images.

If validation is successful, payment can commence using conventional methods. If something does not add up, the customer is discretely informed. They probably forgot to scan a product. What is new here, is that shoppers do not have to guess at what this may be. They receive suggestions as to which item may be missing.

Supersmart powered by Bizerba is available worldwide in various versions. It combines the technology of Supersmart – an Israeli start-up, of which Bizerba is a shareholder - and Bizerba's retail knowledge and service network. Retailers can run this system with their own devices. They could also use an app on their customers' smartphones. That ensures investment remains manageable.

"I am very proud of this EHI prize," said Bizerba CEO, Andreas Kraut,  at the award ceremony. "It shows we are addressing the right retail sector issues. We are doing so with our innovative solutions."

Yair Cleper is Supersmart's founder and CEO. He says, "It is a real honor for the Supersmart team that Bizerba has become a Top Supplier Retail. They did so by implementing our Supersmart solution. They did so along with METRONOM in Makro Czech Republic. For me, this is also a wonderful recognition for our solution. Our vision and mission are to change stores in this way. That is being put into practice, here and now."

Tudor Andronic, Retail Vicepresident at Bizerba, adds, "The retail sector is undergoing a revolution. New technologies are becoming increasingly popular with clients. These are slowly finding their way to the markets. We are meeting this challenge. We are convinced we can offer our clients a functional solution. This solution is Supersmart powered by Bizerba."

The Supersmart powered by Bizerba was presented at the recently held EuroShop 2020 in Düsseldorf.
