Surplus Systems-Retail GmbH presents efficient store concept at Fruit Logistica

Smart-Display offers mobile and flexible advertising space to fresh food trade

Today's fresh food market needs integrated and robust store concepts for smooth product presentation at the POS. The sustainability and robustness of the concept, as well as the low investment and easy handling, are particularly important. At this year's Fruit Logistica, Surplus Systems-Retail LLC will present the smart display concept to the trade public: The concept was developed about 4 years ago and has already been successfully established with all well-known retail chains in Germany. "The system is perfectly suited for smaller To Go shops where the efficient use of a small operating area is important, but also for hypermarkets," Jürgen van Herp explains.

With the ubiquitous cardboard displays, the problem was that they were easily damaged, which is why the solution was quite costly. Through the Smart Display, Surplus Systems-Retail LLC wants to offer the market a sustainable, robust alternative that also requires low investment and is easy to use. The reusable system, made of polypropylene, weighs between 4.5 kg - 9.0 kg, is completely washable and has a load capacity of up to 130 kg.

Solution offers mobile and flexible advertising space
The solution can also have prints in different basic colours, according to customer requirements. Furthermore, the display can be equipped with a one- or two-sided printed slide-in unit. "This slide-in unit can be used according to customer requirements and has multiple uses: Among other things, it is used as an information board, for example for new or somewhat unusual products such as certain fruit exotics.

Also important are the greater longevity and better stability compared to the existing solutions. This is because the display does not fade as quickly as its cardboard counterparts and offers the store a mobile and flexible advertising space. "The decisive factor for us was that we can have the display in our corporate colours. This will allow us to permanently launch a uniform campaign space that can be used variably," said a senior manager of a retail chain that is using the solution.

Great marketing potential
The display can be equipped with different attachments, depending on the customer's requirements and the product to be marketed. The metal basket, for example, is particularly suitable for citrus fruits and melons, while nuts and Pick&Mix products are more likely to be presented in plastic boxes. "We also have special inserts for Ifco and EPS crates. In many modern supermarkets, the flow of goods is mainly concentrated on the weekend. On the days when you sell less, you actually only need small quantities instead of whole crates at the POS. The inserts ensure that the shelves look full, even with small quantities, without the surplus goods spoiling".

All in all, Van Erp sees great growth potential for the smart display system. In the first four years, the management of Surplus Systems-Retail focused primarily on the German food retail sector. But now they are ready for the next step, says Van Herp. "We now want to market the system in other European countries as well. We have also made the first experiences on the Chinese market."

Smart-Displays are becoming commonplace in China as well.

First presentation of new reusable solution
In addition to this already established system, Surplus Systems-Retail will present a second, completely new reusable solution at Fruit Logistica 2020.
