Exsa Europe introduces eco-friendly grape packaging

Exsa Europe is taking the next step toward making the chain sustainable. They have introduced carry bags that are biodegradable and compostable.

"The amount of plastic used in the fresh fruit trade is a thorn in our side. By introducing this eco-friendly packaging, we are taking the next step in reducing the use of plastic," says Noud van den Broek.

"We developed this packaging together with our South African colleagues. In this way, the grapes are packaged straight from the source in these new, sustainable carry bags. Clear communication on the packaging ensures consumers know the characteristics of the packaging material," says Noud.

"We have tested this packaging extensively. This year we are also scaling up to increase the impact. We package between six and seven million carry bags per year in South Africa. The goal is to switch completely to a sustainable alternative as quickly as possible," explains Van den Broek.

"We have already taken the first step when it comes to grape punnets too. Here, we have introduced heat seal packaging. This kind of packaging reduces the amount of plastic used by +/- 17%."

"At our repackaging plant in in Elshout, we also only use R-PET trays. These are made from a minimum of 50% recycled PET packaging. Along with our growers and clients, we are continuing to push back against the use of plastic," concludes Noud.
