Mexico accounts for almost half of the world's avocado exports. In 2022, its avocado exports amounted to a record $3.495 billion. The role of the United States as an importer is becoming increasingly important and that of the rest of the world less so.
In the past year, 86.1% of all Mexican avocado exports went to the US market, in terms of value, a share that exceeded the previous 80.2% all-time high recorded in 2014.
Thus, Mexico's avocado export growth is based on the purchases made by Americans, which also explains the decreasing geographical diversification of Mexican avocado exports.
Mexico accounted for 47.5% of all global avocado exports in 2022, with sales worth 3.008 billion to the United States.
The market value achieved by the Mexican product in its other destinations is substantially lower: Canada ($287 million), Japan ($87 million), Spain ($41 million), El Salvador ($26 million), Honduras ($11 million), and the rest of its destination countries (less than $10 million each).
In 2003, the United States accounted for only 30.2% of Mexican avocado exports. Sales were then diversified to destinations such as Japan (20.5%), France (14.9%), and Canada (9.7%).
The Calavo Growers company believes that the eating healthy trend that has been developing in the United States contributes to the current and expected growth in consumption as avocados do not contain cholesterol or sodium, are dense in fiber, vitamin B6, antioxidants, potassium, and folate, and contain unsaturated fats, which help reduce cholesterol.
