European market should see plenty of avocado supplies from Peru this summer

Europe is an important avocado market for Mission Produce. Between 2013 and 2020, the continent has quintupled the size of its avocado market from 132,000 metric tons to 667,000 metric tons. Despite industry demand being strong and expected to continue to be firm heading into the summer months, Mission Produce is confident it will be able to meet demand. “Based on industry numbers, the European market is expected to have plenty of supply available now that we are in Peru’s season,” says Thomas Padilla, Senior Director of Export Sales for the company.

Promotable volumes
“Peru is a key supplying country for the European market, but we are also sourcing from Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, Colombia, Israel and South Africa,” he added. Peru’s avocado season runs now with promotable supplies expected until late September. Supplies from Peru are anticipated to be plentiful and at promotable volumes this season. “Promotable volumes will be great for consumers to take advantage of by using avocados in their summer smoothies and salads,” Padilla said.

Although all industries are being challenged by a global lack of physical container equipment, Padilla remains optimistic regarding the availability of avocados in Europe. “The container shortage is causing slowdowns and difficulties across all industries. A combination of strong demand and lack of availability have resulted in increased costs. However, the industry still expects plenty of opportunities for summer promotions,” he commented.

Strategically located warehouse in the Netherlands
Not only does Mission source avocados from many regions of the world, the company also markets its avocados worldwide by leveraging its 12 state-of-the-art forward distribution centers in major cities throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. “Europe is definitely an important market for our overall business with the largest markets including the United Kingdom, France and Germany. We have a strategically located distribution center in Breda, the Netherlands, from where we provide our European customers with our value-added product,” concluded Padilla.
