François Moran, Tropibana:

“With the lockdown being lifted, we have had a 30 to 40% increase in revenue”

Monday, May 11th marked the official lifting of the lockdown, as the French have experienced it since the 17th of March. Professionals of the fruit and vegetable sector at Rungis continued to supply their clients during these peculiar times, but activities clearly increased at the beginning of the week.

“With the reopening of markets, a majority of the clients are getting their supplies again. Since Monday, we have had a 30 to 40% increase in revenue, but the margin has narrowed a bit, which is normal,” explains François Moran of Tropibana. “As for our range of products, the sales increase mainly regards basic products like citrus fruits, bananas and pineapples. Stone fruits such as peaches and apricots are less concerned, as their season is just beginning.”

“The pineapple market has remained high for 3-4 weeks”
Currently, ordinary pineapples, depending on the brand, are sold between 10 and 13 euros per parcel. Yesterday morning, François sold everything.

“Of course, the lifting of the lockdown played a role in the sales increase, but for several weeks, the pineapple market has been defined by a supply being lower than the demand. Because of the health crisis, there is less collecting, fewer ships, so less offer upon arrival. In France, we currently sell pineapples that are still green, a product usually popular on the Scandinavian market, but not in Paris. However, we are not experiencing any difficulty in sales. For pineapples, like for ginger, lemons and all these products to which we attribute health benefits, the market is active.”
