New strawberry from Thailand to help combat cancer

A research project in Thailand is looking to produce a strawberry that is high in Anthocyanin, which has been shown to have anti-carcinogenic properties. While other strawberries offer this in high amounts, they do not grow well in Thailand.

As a result, the Royal Projects Foundation and the Thai Research Fund (TRF) have jointly funded the research project, which is being conducted by one of the Naresuan University’s doctoral candidates, to develop a strawberry variety that will contain a relatively high amount of anthocynanin and also blossom well in Thailand.

“We are in the process of boosting anthocynanin in our strawberries. The prospect is so good,” said Narongchai Pipattanawong, the marketing director of the Royal Project Foundation. “We expect satisfactory results within the next two years,” he said.

“We have already come up with a strawberry variety that contains the desirable qualities, but we are still experimenting with it and can’t disclose details yet,” he said.

Still, he was proud to say that this variety would deliver 100 milligrams of anthocyanin per strawberry. “With such an amount, our strawberry will be able to combat cancers,” Peerasak said.
