Already a fair amount of Tommy Atkins and Palmer mangoes are entering the European market from Brazil. The first Keitt from that country has also already arrived, and more follow weekly. Additionally, a small number of Osteen mangoes from Spain is available.
“The market is not yet under pressure, but you can notice a certain type of tension. In coming weeks, large batches are expected from Brazil. The containers have been loaded and shipped, and they will arrive in October. This could put pressure on prices,” says Sjoerd Meijer of import company Fruitmarket.
Possibly a difficult season
It is fairly normal for Spain and Brazil to enter the market simultaneously with their mangoes, but total volumes are expected to become very large in coming weeks. But not all of the strains will arrive at the same time. “Of the Kent variety, volumes will arrive from Brazil later and there is a good chance that their harvest will coincide with the Peruvian harvest of Kent mangoes. In general, Peruvian Kent is preferred over Brazilian Kent. All in all, this season could turn out to become quite difficult.”
