California peach harvest underway
All markets have a great demand for peaches and all want more product. US retail, wholesale, and export markets are strong as consumers worldwide continue to love eating great tasting peaches. Prices have been higher in the last few years as less acreage for peaches is in production placing fewer sellers in the market. “New varieties are continually being evaluated and introduced to the market to compete with consumer demand,” explains an HMC Farms representative, “Domestically, bulk produce still out paces consumer packs.”
Peaches are grown in multiple other states such as: South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, Texas, Virginia, New York and Colorado. However, the biggest challenge to California growers is not the competition, but growing requirements. “Water, energy, labor and governmental requirements continually challenge growers in California,” adds an HMC Farms representative.
