Major AU almond company invests in new equipment

Select Harvests will invest $12.9 million in biomass energy generation and an almond dryer at its Robinvale facilities in north west Victoria.

The company used its annual general meeting to make the announcements, as well as release its estimate of the 2015 crop.

Select Harvests, which owns almond orchards in NSW, Victoria and South Australia will spend $11.9 million on a Biomass Electricity Cogeneration Plant which it expects will generate 2.5 megawatts a year of energy from the pruning, shells and hulls it generates from almond harvesting.

It will spend a further $700,000 on building an almond dryer, ready which will be ready by January 2015, which will allow harvest to continue in wet weather.

At the company's annual general meeting, chairman Paul Thompson also announced the company expects to harvest approximately 13,000 tonnes of almonds in 2015.
