According to the fruit merchant, along with the competition from the summer fruits on the market, there is also less sales in general. "A few large Russian importers have stopped importing the greater volumes. The traditional export destinations, such as the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and France, have remained, but sales are still lower than in previous years."
Jan has little hoop that this season will bounce back. "Quality is not the problem. There are enough good pears for sale, but it remains to be seen if all the pears can be sold before the new season begins. The schedules will continue on, but outside the schedules, the sales become much harder. The unsorted pears, of good quality, are selling for 50-60 cents, whereas previously they were being sold for 75-80 cents."
