Canadian cherry season begins
Canadian Cherries are Ready for China
As of June 14th, Canadian Cherries have been granted access to a new major market, that will vastly expand the industry possibilities. Global Fruit is very excited and eager to begin this year's season and new beginnings with China. With British Columbia's warm days, cool nights and excellent looking crop, this season's fruit will be top quality and ideal for these new opportunities. Global Fruit's President was in Beijing for the final negotiations and signing of the agreement, and is very happy to report this positive forward movement for the industry.
Summerland Research Centre
Since 1936 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists at the Paciļ¬c Agri-Food Research Centre in Summerland, British Columbia, have been developing high quality sweet cherry cultivars. Some of their goals are to lengthen the harvest season, produce a better fruit quality, increase the fruit's resistance to disease and insects, and increase the adaptability the cherries to the Canadian climate. Some of the more well known varieties such as Sweetheart, Staccato and Sentennial, have all been developed at the Research Centre. Their sweet cherry breeding program has developed an international reputation for the superior quality varieties they release.
