Facilities of Viveros Hernandorena in greenhouse.
"We are the bridge between growers and breeders. We inform growers about the new varieties and we convey their needs to the breeders," explains Rosa Hernandorena, of the Commercial Department of Viveros Hernandorena.
Samantha variety
The final goal, in addition to obtaining a better flavour, is to advance towards trees that flower later, to avoid problems caused by late frosts, and at the same, that the harvest can be done early, as the idea is to enter the market as soon as possible to prevent oversupply and maximise profitability.
Greenhouse facilities.
Based in the Valencian town of Carlet, Viveros Hernandorena has 4 hectares of open fields and another 4 hectares of greenhouses where they grow all sorts of fruits, including stone fruit, kakis, figs, kiwis, almonds, pears, olives and quinces by means of micrografting. "We base our work on patters that we keep in stock, grafting the newest varieties following our clients' requests."
Fernando Hernandorena, Manager of Viveros Hernandorena, and Gabriel Fernández, Commercial Delegate in Andalusia and Extremadura.
According to Rosa Hernandorena, almonds are on a growing trend at the moment due the good prices they reach in the market. "Great changes are taking place, both in terms of varieties and in their growing process. Almonds are starting to be treated as irrigated crops instead of rainfed; a crop that must be treated in a professional manner to obtain the best production volumes and take advantage of the current high prices."

But if we talk about a great increase in the demand for a fruit tree, we cannot ignore kakis, one of the great contributors to the firm's revenue, which commercialises around 150,000 plants per year. "At the moment, the kaki seedlings ready to be sold next Winter are sold out; this proves that the demand for kaki seedlings from growers and great companies keeps growing steadily."
New plantations
Viveros Hernandorena is currently expanding its plantations and seeking to diversify its export markets. It is already working with clients in Portugal, France and especially Italy, and it will soon enter the Middle East.
