Places 941 PV panels

UK: Branstons goes even greener

Branston, the UKʼs largest packer and supplier of potatoes, turns their South West site even greener with the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.

The 3.34 hectare site in Ilminster, Somerset, which handles around 90,000 tonnes of potatoes a year, will from March be host to 941 PV panels with a total capacity of 235kWp. The panels will be situated on the south-facing roof of the factory. This £267K investment will see an estimated annual generation of 176 MWh of electricity, which equates to 8 percent of their current total use of electricity.

“The installation of these PV panels at our South West site is part of our ongoing environmental commitment to reduce our reliance on natural resources and harness what we can internally, as well as managing the increase in production costs we, as an industry, are faced with on an ongoing basis," explains Vidyanath Gururajan, Branston Projects Director.

“Not only are we installing PV panels at our Ilminster site, we are also investing an additional £140K capital in our Lincoln site by adding 400 more PV panels. These will add an additional 100kWp capacity to the site, increasing our total of displaced electricity by 8%.

“We are extremely proud of our green achievements and continue to look forward and lead the food and agriculture sector in looking for alternative energy solutions, and reducing our carbon emissions."

Branston is committed to finding greener energy solutions. These solar PV installations at their Lincoln and Ilminster sites are the latest initiative in their commitment to a low-carbon future. The company already uses an innovative anaerobic biodigester plant at its Lincoln site, which generates energy from outgrade potatoes and provides around 40% of the siteʼs electricity.
