Codling moth sexual confusion

Italy: The new product from Suterra has been authorised

After its success in the United States, Australia, South Africa and Argentina, finally Suterra's Puffer® technology arrives in Europe.

On 7th February 2013, the Italian Ministry of Health has authorised (Reg. No. 15597) the use of CheckMate Puffer® CM to control the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) on apple, pear and quince trees and other pome fruit trees as well as walnut trees and all of the other crops affected by the insect, by spreading sexual confusion.

The product is brand new in Europe, where so far only CS (capsule suspension, another Suterra exclusive), RB (ready-to-use lures) and VP (product with evaporable a.s.) formulations were authorised.

CheckMate Puffer® CM is an aerosol formulation to be used once a year before the first generation starts flying with a dosage of 2-3 units per hectare.

Everything that the agriculturist needs to do, is insert the can in the automatic dispenser (Puffer® Aerosol Cabinet) after having set the time and programme (12 or 24 hour programme) and place the device on a branch or on a pole, between the last third of the plant and 50cm higher.

The automatic dispenser will release the precise amount of pheromone to control codling moths during the entire season. It has been proven that Puffer® works regularly up until the last day, cutting down labour by 70-80%.

As with other sexual confusion methods, it is necessary to monitor adult moths by positioning the traps before they start flying and carrying out checks during the whole season. If the orchards have been attacked consistently during previous years or if fruit has been heavily damaged, it is recommended to use specific insecticides to integrate the sexual confusion method.

Positive classification: physio-chemical (flammable, but without pictogram), toxicological (irritant to skin) and eco-toxicological (classified but without pictogram), free from residues and so it has no latency period, efficacy level equal or superior to the products already marketed, high stability during storage (at least 3 years).

CheckMate Puffer® CM is suitable for organic farming.
