Last year, the companies comprising the Agroponiente Group, a society from Almeria dedicated to the production and marketing of fruits and vegetables, produced a total of 287.2 million kilos of products through Agroponiente SA and Vega Cañada SCA. 65 percent of which was exported, mainly to Central European countries.
According to this information, 227 million kilos of products, mainly tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, eggplant, Chinese cabbage, beans, cantaloupe and watermelon came from the 12 facilities owned by Agroponiente; the remaining 60,2 corresponded to Vega Cañada's tomato, melon and watermelon production.
The company is getting ready for the next International Horticultural Fair 'Fruit Logistica', where they expect to have more than 200 business meetings and to present new varieties of peppers and tomatoes as well as new retail formats through Agroponiente, whereas Vega Cañada will showcase its product catalog, in which 90 percent of the marketing focuses on tomatoes.
The horticultural company, which has declined to give specifics about their turnover, is celebrating the tenth anniversary of Vega Cañada. The farm has a total area of 65,000 square meters - 26,800 built in the auction section, 4,648 in packaging and 6,004 in manufacturing - and belongs to the Tomato Regulatory Council of La Cañada-Níjar, the first protected geographical certification for tomato in Spain.
The company's production undergoes strict quality controls that have made it worthy of recognition, European certification in accordance with the UNE-EN-ISO 90007:2000, the UNE 155 001, also known as GlobalGAP and requested by major brands supermarket in Europe, and the British protocol GBS.
