"Rien van Beek: "Space in the market for cool storage at trading centre"
Netherlands: R&M Forwarding starts warehousing activities in Ridderkerk
In 2005 Rien van Beek founded R&M Forwarding with Mark van der Slik, after years of experience in the logistics of sending fruit, conventionally as well as in containers. In Februari 2009 the independent fruit exporter moved to the former Ebrex location in Schiedam and now the company has opened a second location at the Handelsweg 120 in Ridderkerk, a modern cooling house (2,200 pallet places, 14 docks) at a premium location in the logistic heart of fruit and vegetable Holland.
"We offer the complete package of services in the area of transport, customs clearance, distribution and warehousing. We've been doing this in Schiedam for a number of years, but we outgrew ourselves there, so we have moved our activities to Ridderkerk," says Rien. "We already have a fair amount of customers at the trading centre, but expect to be able to extend it with our own location. Compared to, for instance, the Westland, the number of cool storage companies in Ridderkerk is limited. I am convinced that there is space for our logistic services."
Most of the containers go straight to the recipients at home and abroad, both in transit or cleared, but in their own cooling house R&M Forwarding has a big storage and cooling capacity to store the products under the right conditions. The various cells which are set at product dependent temperatures, ensure an optimal condition for the stored fruit. "We focus on fruit expedition in the widest sense of the word. Our location, right in the middle of the fruit port of Rotterdam, gives us the opportunity to transport anything, from pallets to full trailers, to whatever destination," says Rien.
At the moment the company is busy implementing a new Warehouse Management System (WMS) in the Ridderkerk location. "Our warehouse has a full track and trace system which means we can determine the status and location of a pallet at any moment. Our internal bar code system linked to the iPad scan makes it easier for our employees to pick, switch or check pallets for quality. Our contacts - customers, transporters and surveyors - receive entry to a tailor made web portal," continues the fruit shipping agent.
"At the moment it's a bit calmer, but we can't complain about the past year. One day we got 10 containers, the next 50, but I've been in this business for so long that I don't worry when it's a bit calmer. Soon the melon season will start, and it will get busier again," expects Rien. "With the combination of a cooling house in Rotterdam and Ridderkerk I have faith in the future."
