Pakistan misses mango export target

Pakistan has failed to hit is mango export target of 1.5 million tons this year. The failure had been predicted some months ago and, according to Waheed Ahmed, of All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetables Importers, Exporters and Merchants, is due to poor logistics and sanctions against Iran.

“Pakistan could have earned $50 million by achieving the target. However, it earned only $39 million from mango exports,” he said.

He said that mango production was also down 35% this year.

The main reason for the problems, however, are the logistics, he says. Amongst logistical issues are in depth inspections of mango consignments in order to prevent drug smuggling.

He said that Pakistan has lost in the region of $10 million over being unable to export to Iran this year.

Exports to the US could take up some of the shortfall, but again there are issues in the supply that need to be addressed, such as irradiation facilities and increased air capacity. The same is true for Japan.

Ahmed said that they would focus on exports to Japan, Australia, South Korea, the US, Mauritius and Lebanon in the future and initiatives would be taken to uplift the quality of Pakistani mangoes to increase exports.
