Setback for India as China imports Pakistan mangoes

Despite Pakistan experiencing a bad year in general for the export of mangoes there is some good news on the horizon - though not for competitor nation, India - China has started with the import of Pakistan grown mangoes.

India had been hopeful that the mango industry there would benefit from the signing of a recent agreement with China, so this news will likely come as something of a disappointment.

The two governments had signed the protocol of phytosanitary requirements for exporting mangoes from India to China during then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to China in 2003."The first shipment of 40 tons of mangoes is being exported to China in two 40 feet containers valued at $60,000," Pakistani media quoted A Q Khan Durrani, chief executive officer of exporting firm, Durrani Associates, as saying.

He has hopes that China could soon become Pakistan's largest mango export market.
