Argentina: Good pomegranate season

The pomegranate season ended in Argentina last month and although pomegranate campaigns are characterized by being quite short (March to May for the Wonderful variety), according to Federico Bordi of the Argentine pomegranate export company Tika Group, it was a very good season. "The Argentine pomegranates had an excellent flavor," Bordi stated by confirming that during this year the fruit quality was very good. "In times of ripening the fruit exceeded 14 and 15 degrees Brix, and reached up to 19 degrees Brix," Bordi said.

In addition, Federico assured that during this season both fruit quality and international prices were very similar to those of last season. "Everything in the campaign has been kept very similar to last year. Neither low nor high excesses affected the season," says Bordi.

With regard to Acco pomegranate, which is also produced and marketed by Tika Group, Federico says this is a variety of very good acceptance in the European market and has an advantage over the Wonderful variety. Acco was marketed from February, while the Wonderful variety begins shipping in March.

It should be noted that Argentina is a country where pomegranate production is increasing. This year Argentina exported a total of approximately 440 tons of pomegranate while Chile exported 3,300 tons and Peru 2,500 tons. Next year, Argentina expects to triple its production of pomegranates.

As for prices, Bordi said that during this campaign the FOB prices that were handled from Buenos Aires bound to Russia were of USD 14.25 and USD 15.25, in sizes of 6 and 7 and in boxes of 4 kilos to 4.5 kilos net. Besides Russia, Argentina exported this product to Germany, Canada, England and Holland who was the main export destination.
