Jeroen Buyck, Calsa:

"Belgium: "Low prices fruit and vegetables due to large supply"

The local vegetable season is slowly starting in Belgium. "At the moment trade is quiet and this to just about all countries"
Jeroen Buyck tells. "It is striking that the sales of leeks are rather low compared to last year. Especially in the south of Europe sales are not doing too well." He mentions that the quality is a lot better than a month ago. Also the available quantities have increased. The trader says that the prices of leeks have decreased on Friday last week and on Easter Monday. "We hope that this will cause sales to increase so that prices will not decrease further."

The exporter sees the volumes of tomatoes grow every day. "Also the export is slowly starting. Prices paid for tomatoes are not high at the moment, especially not for the start of the season. Also aubergines are very cheap for the time of the year. Lettuce is amply available on the market. Till about two weeks ago there was a recovery of prices in the market, because the German market took a lot of lettuce, but in the meantime that demand has decreased and prices have decreased considerably."

"In general sales are rather normal, although a little quiet and it is clear that because of the Euro crisis sales are difficult in various countries. One wants to buy, but it should not cost too much, Also there is a large supply everywhere and the trade margins are therefore under a lot of pressure. This is clear from the price forming of all products, both vegetables (tomatoes, aubergines, lettuce and leeks) and fruit (such as pears)."
