Costa Rica protests against barriers set for Dominican avocados
Costa Rican importers and government officials from the Dominican Republic protested that it took 23 days to process the first shipment of Dominican avocados that arrived in Costa Rica via Puerto Limon, and 20 days to process the second shipment.
The Dominican ambassador in Costa Rica, Octavio Lister, said that the process only lasted up to three days in the United States and one day in Europe. However, if we want to compare this process to a closer destination, the diplomat said, it only takes El Salvador three days to process them and Panama two days.
The complaints were backed by the Chamber of Exporters and Importers of Perishable Producers, as some of its members are importing fruit from the Caribbean country.
Randall Benavides, president of the chamber, said this variety of Dominican avocado was a little more perishable than the Hass variety. He said that, due to this, the product that stayed for a long time in the ports and warehouses would mature, forcing marketers to sell it quickly or to lose it.
