There is no flurry of activity on the carrot market at the moment. "There is movement, but not huge amounts," says Paul van der Linde from Emmeloord. "We are not a specialist in Poland, North Holland companies are stronger there, but we have noticed that the demand from that corner has become quieter since the invasion of Ukraine."
Furthermore, according to the processor, quality is currently an issue on the carrot market. "Black spots in particular are a big problem in carrots this year. There are plenty of good batches on the market, but there are also many batches that are deteriorating rapidly. Many processors have their hands full with their own stock and if the sales are too quiet, batches with a spot are left alone for too long," Paul explains.
"Because it has been quiet for too long now, prices are under pressure, as can be seen from the stock exchange quotations in Emmeloord and Middenmeer. However, it is not the case that nothing is happening. There are some carrots going to Romania and there is also some trade overseas," says Paul. He looks forward to the rest of the season with confidence. "It really does get busier, but that is often only from the end of March, beginning of April."
