Strong supplies of peppers to kick off 2022

Pepper supplies are seeing strong volumes coming out of Mexico right now.

“With increased pepper acreage in Mexico, there is more supply this year than last year to support the high demand and the quality has been fantastic,” says Jeff Madu, vice-president of sales for Windset Farms based in Delta, B.C. While the majority of the current supply is coming from Mexico, Canadian production will start in March. (Windset has facilities throughout British Columbia, Canada.) “Spain is also in production but it’s not so impactful due to the current restraints,” adds Madu.

Meanwhile, the demand for peppers is very strong from retailers. “Foodservice is coming back but the retailer demands remain high,” says Madu, noting Windset carries Maestro® Bell Peppers, Crescendo® Sweet Pointed Peppers, Dolce® Mini Peppers, and will be adding hot peppers in spring 2022. “People want to stay healthy more than ever and they are consuming more vegetables including peppers.”

Looking ahead at the coming weeks for pepper production, Madu says that Windset - which is celebrating 25 years in the business - expects the volume to be strong for a few more weeks. However, in February, the production is expected to come back down slightly. Then as demands pick up again for spring and summer, Windset should have strong production coming from its B.C. greenhouses.
