Dutch company expands sustainable cherry box range

In 2020, Fonkels successfully introduced 500g and 1kg cherry trays. These are made from 100% recycled cardboard. This year, this Dutch company is expanding its container assortment significantly. New in 2021 is cherry boxes with flaps and a 250g container. There's also a multifunctional kg package. This is suitable for other fruits, too, like grapes, apples, pears, and plums.

"Growers' processes and specific requirements play an important role," begins Wim Apeldoorn, Fonkels' general manager. "That's while developing all these fruit containers. Over the past year, we've collected all our customers' feedback. We've incorporated this into the packaging designs. We've also examined our own production process seeing where it can be more efficient. That translates into a lower average cost price for the farmer."

"The cherry boxes with flaps were developed along with certain growers. They supply the food retail sector. There, enclosed trays are often a must. The multifunctional cherry container is much sought after by farm stores. They have many different types of boxes for grapes, cherries, apples, pears, mandarins and so on. The standard cherry tray doesn't suffice. They commonly use plastic containers. This is a 100% sustainable replacement. It offers the stores something they can use to create a sleek, sustainable look on their shelves."

"We want to be a total sustainable packaging supplier for growers as far as possible. That's through these cherry-specific additions. But also by expanding our strawberry, soft fruit, apple, and various vegetable trays. A farmer might still want a specific container that we don't have a standard in our assortment. Then we'll increasingly develop this as a custom-made product. The starting point is always sustainability, sturdiness, and optimization of the grower's processes," concludes Wim.
