Extreme weather conditions reduce the number of commercially viable mangoes

Chinese production volume of Panzhihua mangoes declines by one third

Selenium-rich farming is a method where the agricultural crops are enriched with selenium, either by growing the crops in selenium-rich soil, adding selenium to the fertilizer, or spraying selenium-rich water on the leaves. The agricultural crops produced in this way are considered high quality and they have additional economic value. Consumers have gained a better understanding of selenium-supplements in recent years as their interest in healthy products is growing. That is why selenium-rich products from China become more and more popular every day. There is great potential in this market.

Panzhihua mangoes

Panzhihua is one of the largest mango production areas in China. The main mango variety produced in Panzhihua is the Keitt mango. That variety accounts for more than 80% of the surface area devoted to mango plantation in Panzhihua. The Keitt mango variety is less greasy than other varieties, the fruit flesh is richer and glossier. The fruit flesh is quite sweet, and can be sweeter than 18 degrees.

"There are many mango varieties in Panzhihua, Sichuan. The production season begins every year in June and continues until December. In comparison with previous years, this season the Panzhihua mango production volume declined by one third. The volume of commercially viable mangoes is extremely limited. This is the time of year when Keitt mangoes normally enter the market in large volumes. The production volume is smaller, but the market conditions are also worse than usual. That is why the price did not rise, but declined instead." This is according to Mr. Fu Zuhong of Miyi County People's Agriculture Development Co., Ltd.

"Panzhihua suffered from hailstorms in April and many mangoes were damaged or destroyed as a result. Farmers suffered significant financial loss. In addition, the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 had an adverse impact on the Chinese mango market. Fruit traders were less willing to purchase large volumes of mangoes. We supply selenium-rich mangoes. Considering the current situation, we have focused all our attention on sales via e-commerce platforms."
