Longan fruit is well-known in the China market. Traditionally, this fruit is widely consumed in the Guangdong province, so imports in Guangzhou are significantly higher compared with other cities in China. "Most imported longan fruit is from Thailand and Vietnam. Currently, supply from Thailand is trickling into the China market, although the volume is still limited as the harvest has just started. I estimate that supply will gradually increase in the coming months," said Edward Law from Wanxin Trading Co., Ltd.
In addition to Thailand, China also imports a large volume from Vietnam. "Because production seasons in the two countries take place in different months, imports don’t coincide with each other and a good sales cycle is achieved. The longan season in Guangdong has now ended, so the price of imported longan is quite good. I expect that prices will not drop much even if there is more supply in the market, and will remain stable as long as the quality remains high."
There are two varieties in China, one dry and the other soft, while there is only one in Thailand. The first season in Thailand begins in early September and ends at the end of November while the second one begins in mid-December and continues through February of the following year. This winter season’s production is always much larger because the fruit grows better in colder conditions. ”
