Currently, the Dominican Republic has more than 7,545 hectares cultivated with pineapple crops in different areas, which produce more than 200 million units of pineapples, and exports amount to more than 10 million dollars.
These data were provided by the National Confederation of Agricultural Producers (CONFENAGRO), an entity that states that in 2016 sales abroad amounted to US $7 million.
Producers grouped in the different associations of the sector affirm that, despite the efforts to expand the markets, they still are very far from Costa Rica, as their pineapple exports amount to nearly one billion dollars.
They also said that after the North American company Dole left the country, the Dominican Republic, which had a preponderant place in the production and export of pineapple in the world, was displaced from that market by Costa Rica, in the 90's.
CONFENAGRO strongly supports the Pineapple Producers Association of Cevicos (APROPIC), which is organizing the Seventh National Pineapple Fair, which will be held on November 23, 24, and 25 in the Duarte park, in the municipality of Cevicos.
This year the main theme of the fair is exports.
The activity involves all pineapple producers in the country, both producers who sell their product in the local market and producers who export it to international markets, such as Italy, France, Israel, and the United States, among other places.
State institutions linked to the agricultural sector and NGOs of the sector, agrochemicals and suppliers of organic products, equipment and agricultural implements will also participate in the fair. Other participants include land, air, and sea couriers and freight forwarders.
