Spain is the EU's top organic producer with nearly three million hectares and ranks sixth globally, according to the 2024 organic production report posted on the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food's website.
The document shows that, by the end of 2024, the area devoted to organic production reached 2,944,941 hectares. Although this is 46,940 hectares less than the previous year, its share of the total cultivated agricultural area in Spain has increased by 2.33 points and now stands at 12.31%, due to a larger decrease in the total area.
The data, collected by the autonomous communities, remains provisional until confirmed by the European agency Eurostat. The decrease of 46,940 hectares in organic farmland is primarily concentrated in Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha, and the Valencian Community.
Within organic vegetable production, the number of hectares dedicated to tubers and roots (+7.3%), green harvested plants for animal feed (+2.9%), fresh vegetables, and strawberries (+1.2%) has increased.
Internationally, studies highlight that Spain is the world's top producer of organic olives and grapes, and the third largest producer of organic citrus fruits.
In 2024, there were 62,621 registered organic production operators, marking a 2.8% decrease from the previous year. The total number of activities also declined by 2.6%, reaching 66,687.
There was also a 3.4% decrease in registered organic industrial activities, totaling 11,498, including those related to the production of plants and animals.
The National Food Strategy highlights the importance of promoting the organic sector to preserve biodiversity and safeguard the environment.
