Europe is still 'flooded with limes' according to Portuguese lime importer

"Lime market has drastically improved in relation to the last months"

Despite the European lime market improving compared to a couple of months ago, there are still lots of volumes coming in at the moment, says Audrik Victoria, who works for the Portuguese produce exporter: "Europe as a whole is flooded with limes, with prices ranging from €8,00 to €10,00. Brazilian suppliers have played a part in creating this situation. The delays in the port of Salvador have contributed to creating this circumstance. Even so, the market has drastically improved in relation to the last months. Countries like Italy, Poland, Spain, and France are still demanding prime limes while countries like Greece and Hungary are absorbing the limes of a lower quality."

Thankfully, with the weather becoming hotter, demand for limes is expected to pick up, hopefully absorbing most of the extra shipments coming in, Victoria explains. "The summer has finally arrived, which should increase the sales of limes. However, unfortunately, that hasn't been the case just yet. People are willing to pay high enough prices, but they will require quality first. Nevertheless, we're still trying to reach our old customers and expanding our client list to export the limes to new countries. Natural Import has partnered up with another supplier of high-quality limes, which we expect will fit right in the European market."

Victoria expects that incoming volumes from Brazil will start declining: "With the climate in Brazil being colder than usual, the volume of production will decrease, which means the export will decrease as well, forcing the prices to rise due to a lack of quantity of limes in the market. We expect that with the holiday season starting, the consumption of limes will increase as well. However, we remain cautious when it comes to our expectations; however, there is no reason to totally discard the possibility that the levels of consumption of limes do not exceed the levels of last year," he concludes.
