Thanet Earth, the UK's largest glasshouse complex located in Birchington, Kent, has begun construction on its seventh glasshouse, marking a major step forward in expanding its horticultural operations.
The new facility will add 6.5 hectares of lit production space dedicated to tomato cultivation, increasing the site's total growing area from 45 to 51.5 hectares. Once operational, the new glasshouse is expected to yield around 150 million additional tomatoes annually, adding to the site's current output of 400 million tomatoes, 33 million cucumbers, and 24 million peppers each year.
This project represents the final glasshouse approved under the site's original planning permission, with completion targeted for November 2025. Dutch horticultural specialist BOM, a long-time partner of Thanet Earth, has been appointed as the principal contractor for the TG7 development. BOM has built three of the six existing glasshouses at the site and has been involved in the project since its inception in 2008. As a member of the Atrium Agri group, BOM brings experience from several large-scale UK horticultural builds, including a 20-hectare glasshouse project, contributing to their selection for this critical phase.
Groundwork began in March, and the framework for the new glasshouse is now under construction. The project remains on schedule, with the aim of having the facility "planting ready" by late November. A standout feature of the TG7 design is its reinforced gable, engineered to withstand strong winds coming from the Thanet Way. To reduce visual impact and further protect the structure, a new row of trees has been planted along the roadside, serving as a natural windbreak.
Health and safety are a key focus throughout the build. Thanet Earth has partnered with a Westgate-based health and safety consultancy to ensure all site practices meet rigorous standards. In line with its commitment to supporting the local economy, Thanet Earth is engaging local tradespeople, including electricians, groundworkers, and builders, to support construction efforts.
Chris Butler, Managing Director of Thanet Earth, described the new development as a milestone for the company and a strong signal of its long-term investment in UK food production. "Strengthening our capacity to grow more fresh produce here in Britain is vital for long-term
