The Ontario Area Chamber of Commerce has named Simplot Food Group as the Agriculturalist of the Year. The Boise-based company secured a multiyear deal in 2022 to acquire a Kraft Heinz Co. food-processing plant in Ontario, becoming the sole manufacturer of the Ore-Ida brand of potato products.
Simplot, a family-owned company since 1929, operates a large potato processing facility in Caldwell. The company's investment in Malheur County was a significant factor in its recognition by the chamber. The Ontario food processing plant employs approximately 600 local residents.
Simplot's history traces back to the early years of World War II, when it became the leading shipper of onions and potatoes to the military. By the late 1940s, Simplot had commercialized french fries and became the exclusive supplier to McDonald's restaurants, a relationship that continues to this day.
Despite its global presence with 17 food plants worldwide, Simplot remains a family-owned company. It has invested heavily in the Ontario facility, upgrading equipment and expanding operations. The company encourages job seekers to apply for various positions at its plants.
