During the 2019 campaign, Ledesma, the Argentine company from Jujuy that is dedicated to the production and marketing of citrus fruits, managed to enter the US market by exporting fresh lemons to that market for the first time. It also invested one million dollars to modernize the production's packaging system.
The company's fruit business numbers are important. During the 2019 campaign, the company produced a total of 102,318 tons of citrus in the provinces of Jujuy and Salta, where it has 3,000 hectares of fruit plantations. Oranges accounted for 65% of the production (65,695 tons), lemons accounted for 19% (19,713 tons), and grapefruits accounted for the remaining 16% (16,910 tons). 34,464 tons of fruit was packaged at the packing plant.
The main destination for the company's fresh fruit was the European Union (Spain, Holland, Italy). In addition, the company achieved its first export of lemons to North America. The company also began exploring new markets and made shipments to the Middle East, the Far East, Canada, Brazil, and Eastern Europe, among other destinations.
At its juice and oil plant, Ledesma processed 96,945 tons of citrus fruits to produce almost 5,900 tons of juice, a large part of which was sold in the foreign market due to the drop in beverage consumption in the local market. The essential oils niche market is very interesting: in 2019, Ledesma produced 480 tons and exported about 90% of it to the United States and Europe.
