Nearly two thousand tons of pineapple from the fields of the Ceballos Agroindustrial Company, which stands out thanks to its efficiency, productivity, and increasing food offer for local consumption, tourism and export, were sold to European countries.
The main variety obtained and exported from the agricultural areas of Ciego de Avila in 2018 was the MD-2 variety, in response to Guideline 147 of the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution.
This entity decides the strategies to have better monetary-mercantile relations and to consolidate the autonomy granted to growers to increase their competitiveness.
The country exports the MD-2 variety to France, Italy, and Spain through the Ministry of Agriculture's marketer, Cítricos Caribe, which enjoys great prestige in the Old Continent. Meanwhile, Ciego de Avila is working to cultivate two thousand hectares of pineapple.
The application of in vitro technology, by the Bio-plant Center, attached to the University of Ciego de Avila, allows planting hybrids of the MD-2 pineapple in these lands, which led to an increase in the number of this fruit, as it can yield three times more than the Red Spanish variety, which normally doesn't surpass the 30 tons on the same surface.
Reinaldo de Avila Guerra, an engineer in charge of this fruit crop in the south of Ciego de Ávila, said that the MD-2 variety demanded exact cultural attention, good drainage, leveling of soils, irrigation systems, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other requirements.
