Red flesh mandarins

Mandared from Sicily available in Frankfurt

Mandarins arrive on the German market from Israel, Italy, Morocco, Spain and Turkey; a large range of varieties, such as Clemenvilla, Fortuna, Hernandina, Murcott, Nadorcott, Nova, Or, Orri and Tango are available at the fresh food market in Frankfurt. At the beginning of week 7 a trader surprised all with a supply of red flesh mandarins from Italy.

The variety Mandared are class I and sell for 8 Euro per box of 7 kg. The mandarins are very juicy and a sample even showed a juice content of 50% (!). The partly pigmented peel gives, just as the name of the mandarin, a clue about the color of the flesh. The Mandared have no pips and taste excellent, their flavor reminds of blood oranges. The fruit scored 12.9 to 13.2 degree Brix.

Mandared is a hybrid of Clemenules and Tarocco, and is currently the only mandarin variety with red flesh. A Sicilian citrus farmer patented his creation from 1985 in 2004. The Mandared won a citrus innovation award after the introduction on the market in Great Britain in 2014. Mandared have been protected by the plant variety rights in the EU since 2012. Furthermore Mandared® is a protected trade name.
