Full house during the Hessian mushroom day, the day was very well attended.
To find out how the cultivation of oyster mushroom works, the visitors could go on an excursion to the location of Bio Mushroom in Twisteden. And in the afternoon there was a challenging professional program. Three presentations were about the theme “hygiene”. Hygiene is very important for the specialty mushroom producers, because their cultivation techniques aren’t as standardized as for instance for button mushroom.
The containers in which many cultures are grown are often not kept sterile in the long run. The most important tip from the presenters is: Work clean! Clothing is responsible for most pathogens in the culture. It is therefore important never to enter spaces in which, for example, new cultures are being worked with, after you have entered a space where the cultures are already being harvested. Special clothing and maintenance for the machines should be normal practice for all employees. Furthermore employees should be trained and made aware of the problems.
The six speakers who created a challenging professional program,
mainly about the hygiene in the cultures.
The message is that prevention is better than cure. The HLP, who has 97 members, from Germany and neighboring countries, is a member of the Association of German culture and mushroom growers (BDC).
