Germany: Asparagus makes itself scarce

Up until now, a quarter less than last year has been harvested of the rod-shaped vegetable. Experts say it is the fault of the weather.

The weather was cold for a long time in spring, and since a couple of weeks it is furthermore much too dry, says Martin Ley, CEO of the Verenigten Großmärkte für Obst und Gemüse to the SWR.

Therefore, the asparagus harvest has begun later than in previous years, and in terms of quantity, the agriculturalists are also far behind. Ley says it is impossible to catch up before June 24, the traditional end of the asparagus season.

Strawberries doing well

In contrast, according to experts it is looking good for the strawberries. The quality is excellent, for because the strawberry fields can mostly be watered artificially, the farmers are more independent of the weather. Ley does not yet want to give indications regarding cherries, plums and apples. This will depend on the weather of the coming weeks.
