Enhanced food safety screening has also increased the amount of purchases from restaurants and government food service contractors like hospitals and schools. “There have been some modest increases in acreage year after year,” explains Linda Delli Santi, executive director of the British Columbia Greenhouse Growers’ Association. “I think because of all these reasons, we’ll continue to see a growth in greenhouse vegetable production.”
A recent A&W press release praises greenhouse innovations and growing methods stating greenhouse growers “can grow 25 times more tomatoes than on traditional farm fields – all while conserving land, heat and water and allowing the tomatoes to ripen on the vine longer.”
British Columbia competes with greenhouse vegetable production from the United States, Mexico and some European countries. Over half of the BC greenhouse produce is exported mainly to the United States. “There is seasonality for production making some of the competition complementary. 2015 production will be available in March/April.”
