US: Monsanto breaks ground on $400 million research center
Dispensing with the traditional silver-plated shovels, Nixon and Grant instead assisted a phalanx of Monsanto employees as they pulled back a tarp to reveal a mural stretched across a patch of parking lot — the canvas a symbol of the site where the biotech giant will begin construction on a $400 million research center.
The Chesterfield expansion project is expected to add 675 research and development jobs to the regional economy.
Construction will be completed in 2017.
Grant in prepared remarks said the research in a facility that will add 36 greenhouses, 250 laboratories and 13 Controlled Environment Agriculture rooms to the Chesterfield campus will ultimately benefit farmers large and small at every point of the globe.
Nixon called the project consistent with the goal of bringing "jobs of the future" into the state economy.
