"Filip Fontaine: "A number of things will be changed drastically"

BelOrta entering completely new 'organic-road'

It appeared that during the past period discontentment developed with the vegetable growers of organic products at BelOrta. In Sint-Katalijne-Waver a large grower left in order to arrange his own sales. This made the Auction think and take rigorous steps to retain this 'small' segment as well. Filip Fontaine, director of Veiling BelOrta says: "The share of organic in our total turnover is about 3 percent. Organic growers had their doubts and wondered lately whether there was a place for them in the big BelOrta. Of course we have space for our organic growers. We cannot do without them. Perhaps because of the pressure of work lately we did not pay enough attention to our organic producers, but we will now do something about this."

"At the moment we are very busy with a review of our organic process and we want to go to the market in a new spirit. We will really change completely and a number of things will be changed drastically. We want to be closer to our growers still and at the same time to the market as well. Everything has to fit together closely. Shorter lines of communication will be installed. In short we will make an organic- specific change in order to optimize processes. Another change will be made as well between organic and mainsteam. At the moment we are in discussion with our growers and I expect that we, with our plans, will even be stronger in the market and our organic department will be growing back."
