Italy: Favetta strawberries back on the market

Favetta strawberries are characterised by their heart shape, their bright red colour and most of all by their taste, which is sweeter than the other varieties.

This product is available from March until June and, after the success of 2012, AOP Serena decided to put it back in its range.

As they are intended for household consumption, Favetta strawberries will be distributed through mass and traditional retailing.

In terms of volumes, the Favetta variety represents approximately 10% of the strawberry production of Southern Lazio and of the North Caserta area (Campania), the only area where it is produced and where it is very famous: we are therefore talking about a niche product destined exclusively to the Italian market.

As Gennaro Galdiero, CEO of AOP Serena, an association gathering the Giotto and Alto Castertano producer organisations, reports, "the decision to include the Favetta variety in our assortment is part of a strategic plan to support those local products which would have difficulty establishing themselves on the market or that could pose some management problems. If they are well integrated though, they can raise the interest of consumers and be successful on the market."

The produce is placed in a special black packaging, with a graphic element displaying the colours of the Italian flag. It was designed to exalt the characteristics of Favetta strawberries and to make final consumers understand that it is a premium local Italian product.

Favetta strawberries will join the main product of the company i.e. the Melannurca Campana PGI, an apple which is harvested when still unripe, placed on straw beds to ripen and turned by hand to give it an even colour (click here to access a photo report), as well as other two local products: PGI Lemons from Sorrento, with an intense aroma and a pleasant balanced acidity, and Vaniglia Persimmons, with a compact and crunchy pulp and a sweet "vanillla" flavour.
