The awards, a celebration of the art of food photography, saw more than 3000 images entered from over 60 countries around the world in its first year. The shortlisted entries were of an incredible quality and celebrated French food photographer Jean Cazals won the top prize of £5,000 for his remarkable entry 'Black Pigs.' 220 people, including TV chef Gizzi Erskine, nutritionist Lowri Turner and Guild of Food Writers award winner Silvana de Soissons, saw him named as the 2012 Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year at a magnificent awards evening at the Mall Galleries, London in April.
This year’s award introduces four exciting new categories for entrants. The hotly anticipated Food off the Press category for previously published work in books and magazines will open up the competition to a wider range of entries. Similarly, the Food Sn-apping category is for images of food taken on mobile phones, and is in support of Action Against Hunger. The third and fourth categories are Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year, for images of wine, producers and all things related to wine and Food for Celebration, images of festive, celebratory food from across the world.
Also joining the judging panel are some leading names in the food world including renowned chef Antonio Carluccio and The One Show’s Jay Rayner. Lending her vast photography expertise to the mix is also Ellen Silverman, food photographer for Gwyneth Paltrow.
As Henry Dimbleby of Leon Restaurants, who chaired the judging panel and presented the 2012 awards, says: "The breadth and quality of entries [in Year One]was absolutely extraordinary, and there were any number of pictures that could have gone on to win. I’m certain that the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year is going to become one of those big annual occasions and that the awards will go from strength to strength."
Andy Macdonald from Pink Lady UK, comments: "We are delighted to continue as headline sponsor for these awards. The very best food photography is central to how the brand of Pink Lady is portrayed and we believe these awards are the world’s most prestigious for this hitherto uncelebrated art form. We are very excited to see what Year Two will bring."
