Morad Fawzy, Fresh-Agro:

“Demand for Egyptian sweet potatoes starting to boom”

The Egyptian sweet potato season has started for Fresh-Agro from Waalwijk, the Netherlands. The company was founded by Morad Fawzy in 2014, and in the early years it was mostly active in the import and export of seeds, potatoes and onions from and to the Middle East. By means of a cooperation with Egyptian production company, Oxygen Hydrofarm, for Agricultural Development, the Egyptian assortment is now being considerably expanded.

“This Egyptian company is run by Rashad Abou El Nader. They grow bell peppers, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins and onions, both conventional and organic,” Halima says. “Because of this, we have our own production at our disposal in Egypt, so that we can keep the entire supply chain under our control. We are personally the source, making it very interesting regarding prices as well.”

“Furthermore, we work with the largest grower of sweet potatoes in Egypt. We currently have the Beauregard variety available. At the start of the season demand was still quite calm, because of the holidays, but demand is now really starting to erupt. We offer both conventional and organic sweet potatoes. Our focus is on the sales of sweet potatoes on the Dutch market, but we also provided various British customers with sweet potatoes.” The Beauregard season lasts until October, and the Abees variety lasts until January.
