New CPR System crates (called Redea) will replace the current 16 million existing crates over the next two and a half years - supermarkets will no longer have the traditional green crates, but rather these beige ones. A digital system can even make them talk.

"Although the first thing that strikes the eye is the color, they are also revolutionary when it comes to substance. The structure is an innovation studied by the University of Milan that makes crates lighter yet sturdier," reported President Paolo Gerevini during the presentation held on September 2nd, 2021.

There are six models available for the fresh produce segment, all of which weigh between 4 and 9% less than the previous green crates. The base is 5 mm lower and there is a lever for easier opening and closing, plus the crates feature ergonomic handles as well as Smart Labels and RFID tags that can be activated as needed.
“New Redea crates are smaller and lighter than the previous ones, so transport can be reduced by 20% thus saving 10.3% in CO2 emissions. Gas consumption is reduced by 1.66%. What is more, we can use 50% less water with our management systems and our photovoltaic plants generate part of our own consumption."

"As for digitalization, Redea crates are talking crates: the Smart Label, which features a barcode and an RFID tag, enables the management and processing of important information to optimize the system. We have always been at the forefront in Europe when it comes to these issues and I have to say we are even better today, as the key for the future is the creation of a "shared value" that involves the environment, product quality and ethics."
“A more neutral color is more suitable to valorize the colors of the produce and the elegant and functional graphic is inspired by nature, as it was inspired by leaves. The result is extraordinary," added Luigi De Nardo, professor at the Politecnico in Milan.
"Redea cells have the same geometry as giraffe spots or foliar stomas. They enable a better aeration of products, thus improving shelf-life," concluded the professor.
