Sinclair has launched a unique labeling system, the Sinclair Compact Pattern Labeler™ (CPL) with a Vision Recognition System (VRS). “This system is a game changer for smaller locations,” says Duncan Jones with Sinclair. “It is high-speed, automated compact labeling technology that provides advanced tray and pattern labeling options, ideal for smaller packing houses.”

Increased labeling accuracy
The key feature of a Vision Recognition System is that it intelligently locates the produce item and applies the label in the optimum position. Vision recognition technology also provides advanced labeling options allowing more flexibility in how packing houses want to label. A tray-masking feature allows the user to select which produce items within a tray need to be labeled. In addition, the technology can be used for any fruit shape. “VRS comes into its own when labelling randomly positioned produce like tomatoes-on-the-vine or pears” commented Jones.
Reducing operator intervention
Another benefit of VRS is that it allows for different tray patterns to be used on a single packing line. The system will automatically recognize each different pattern (size and fruit layout), automating the labeling process and reducing the need for operator intervention.
Produce and boxes of any color
Using the latest imaging technology, the Sinclair Vision Recognition system uses 3D imaging to create a depth map of the tray passing under its camera. The depth map is used to detect all produce in the tray. Contrary to its 2D imaging predecessor, 3D imaging is not affected by color. As a result, the system has the ability to work with produce, trays, inners, and boxes of any color and at any height up to 300 mm.
Although VRS has been available from Sinclair for 20+ years, and the technology has evolved over time, it was available only on the Sinclair PL4 high-throughput labeler. The latest generation of VRS was launched earlier this year and until now, it was available only on the Sinclair PL4 high-throughput labeler. “This is a high volume, large labeling machine that is not suitable for all packing house requirements,” explained Jones. The latest generation of Sinclair VRS integrated with CPL technology ensures lower volume packing houses have VRS as an option. “A Sinclair Compact Pattern Labeler™ with VRS provides smaller packing houses a higher level of automation and more advanced and flexible tray labeling options.”
