Danish supermarket group partners with Too Good To Go to combat food waste

Netto is the largest supermarket chain in Denmark. They've now partnered with the anti-food wastage app, Too Good To Go. From 23 June, 519 Netto branches will offer bags of left-over products. These will be sold on the Too Good To Go app. This is Too Good To Go's biggest collaboration in Denmark. About 840 tons of food should be saved per year. A trial was recently run at a Netto branch in Copenhagen. It was so well received that the partnership's been expanded.

Clients can choose between different bags. There's 'fruit and vegetables', 'dairy, meat, and refrigerated', and 'grab ’n go' bags. There's a bag of sales items too. Netto stores with bakeries will also offer a bread bag. Netto expects to be able to offer 4.5 of these bags, on average, per store. That amounts to more than 840,000 bags and 840 tons of food per year. This cooperation, therefore, fits in well with the chain's goal. It wants to half food wastage over the next ten years.

"At Netto, we throw 2.33% of the stores' food away. We can't sell it before it's best-by date. We're constantly working on combatting this. That's why we're now partnering with Too Good To Go. This app's used by 1.8 million Danes. It's a good example of entrepreneurship, drive, and responsibility. These have led to a unique, environmentally-friendly solution."

"In 2019, we at Netto discarded 16,125 tons of food. That's far too much. But, it's also a 31% reduction over the past five years. Netto's part of the Salling Group. As such, it supports the UN goal of halving food wastage. And if we make this ambition known, we must be transparent about how it's going. Even when it's not always good news."

"In Denmark, alone, 700,000 tons of food is wasted annually. If we want to address this, we need the large supermarket chains' commitment. That's why we're, of course, delighted that Netto's entering into such a significant partnership with us. Before the corona crisis hit, Epinion did a survey for us. It showed that 88% of Danes want to do more to combat food wastage. So, the motivation's there, and it certainly hasn't diminished during the crisis. We're, therefore, looking forward to giving even more Danes the chance to participate in the food wastage fight."

Besides Too Good To Go, Netto already works with the Danish Food Bank.
