"We have been placing a strong emphasis on innovation and research to differentiate ourselves in the vegetable market. Over time, our production has grown a lot. Today we have several climate-controlled greenhouses and around 800 hectares of land for crop rotation," says Enrique Serrano, Managing Director of Murciana de Vegetales.
The company produces various varieties of lettuce, such as Little Gem, Romaine, and Mini Romaine, among others, and has developed its own varieties, such as the Cresta®, an exclusive red lettuce created after years of research. It has also brought back or improved traditional varieties such as the Caribú® Red, a native red lettuce with a crunchy texture and sweet taste.
"In the last few decades, R&D has been given a big boost. As far as automation is concerned, advanced systems have been implemented with state-of-the-art machinery," says Enrique. "This has allowed companies to produce lettuce or other vegetables that are better adapted to current demands, with more flavor, a longer shelf life, resistance to pathogens, 'mini' varieties, etcetera."
"We've remained strongly committed to sustainability, investing in improving our processes, reducing our environmental impact, and guaranteeing responsible production. Thanks to this commitment, we have been recognized with the Sustainable Management award at the 9th edition of the La Verdad 2025 Agri-Food Awards. "We are delighted to have received this award, which is motivating us to continue investing and strengthening our commitment to the environment," says the general manager of the company, which has the GlobalGAP, BRC, and IFS certifications, among others, which ensure responsible practices and food quality.
"Sustainability is now a key factor. There's a clear demand for traceability, pesticide control, efficient use of water, and lower waste generation. Climate change has added extra pressure; water has to be better managed to be ready for more extreme weather conditions and to keep your environmental impact at bay," he says.
"The future is looking bright for lettuce at Murciana de Vegetales. There's a clear strategy based on innovation, sustainable production, quality guarantees, and growth in national and international markets. Our track record, our ability to adapt, and the work of our great team will be the key to continuing to move forward in an increasingly demanding sector. Our investments in technology, new varieties, and responsible production are putting us in a great position to face the sector's challenges ahead," says Enrique Serrano.
