Polish apple growers are hoping for better prices and storing their apples in cold chambers until that time comes. This is limiting the current availability of good quality apples, says Mohamed Marawan, owner of Polish apple exporter Sarafruit: "The availability for Polish apples has slimmed down compared to the start of the season, because growers have decided to store their apples in cold chambers, closing them while waiting for better prices for their apples. The demand is very good at the moment, maybe less so for some varieties of apples, such as Golden, but I think this will change once the New Year kicks in."

Sarafruit has a focus on the Egyptian market, and the Polish apples are doing very well this year, Marawan explains. "The developments in the Egyptian markets are very good at the moment, our clients expect more amounts from us, with the quality that we can now guarantee, thanks to our new facility. We also signed and already started our new agreements with the supermarket, and we send them set amounts each week."

Demand and prices are at a good level, for both buyers and sellers, Marawan states. "The most popular variety is red cap 'red delicious' right now. There are always requests for it, and we are always doing our best to have these apples available for our clients. However, there are only small amounts that we can find that have the quality that we're looking for. Current apple prices are acceptable in general. However, when looking at the club varieties, such as Gala, clients are requesting even more volumes than they otherwise would, because the price levels are so good, and suitable for their market. The largest challenge is meeting these requests all the time."

This current situation of lower supply will not continue for long, as the cold chambers will eventually open up, leading to better availability and a better season. "I expect that the availability of apples will be better in the remainder of the season. It will also mean we can set new export targets once that happens. In our opinion, the apple season still hasn't fully started yet; the best is yet to come!" Marawan concludes.
